Expanding New Trade Horizons: PA from UPC Taiwan Receives Indian BIS Certification

[Newsletter]

In recent years, India’s rise in the global manufacturing and chemical industries has drawn widespread attention. According to multiple international industry reports, India’s chemical sector has been expanding at an average annual rate of approximately 7–9% and is projected to become the world’s third-largest chemical producer by 2030, ranking after Mainland China and the United States. For Taiwan’s traditional chemical industry, the Indian market represents both a vast blue ocean of opportunity and a new stage where challenges and opportunities coexist.

This month, the phthalic anhydride (PA) produced by UPC’s Kaohsiung Manufacturing Center in Linyuan, successfully passed the industrial inspection of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and officially obtained IS 5158 certification. This marked UPC’s successful entry into the Indian PA market and its recognition as a qualified overseas supplier of phthalic anhydride. This achievement underscores UPC’s strong performance in quality management and international compliance.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), formerly known as the Indian Standards Institute, was established in 1946 and served as India’s sole authority for product standards and certification. To enhance consistency in product quality and safety oversight, BIS introduced a product certification system in 1955, covering nearly all industrial sectors, including agricultural products, textiles, electronics, and chemicals. Once a product obtains BIS certification, it signifies that its quality, safety, and reliability comply with Indian national standards.

For overseas manufacturers, BIS regulates them under the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS), and all controlled products must obtain BIS certification before being imported into India.

UPC has long adhered to the business philosophy of “Honesty, Prudence, and Pragmatism,” and embraces “Technology × Quality × Sustainability” as its core values while expanding a diversified international market presence. BIS certification not only demonstrates the company’s commitment to quality and safety, but also signifies that PA produced at our Kaohsiung Manufacturing Center has officially entered the Indian market, one of the world’s most promising growth engines. Going forward, UPC will continue to enhance R&D and local partnerships, thereby mitigating geopolitical risks, deepening its reach in emerging Asian economies, building a second growth curve, and leveraging the Indian market as a strategic foothold to open a new chapter in UPC's global development.
