UN480 High-Performance Plasticizer
Enhancing Performance and Compliance in PVC Wire & Cable Formulations

Driven by evolving chemical safety regulations, restricted substance requirements from brand owners, and growing sustainability expectations in end-use markets, the PVC wire and cable industry is gradually transitioning from traditional DEHP-based formulations toward plasticizer solutions that offer improved compliance, durability, and processing stability.

Historically, DEHP has been widely used in flexible PVC products due to its excellent processability and cost advantages. However, as international regulations and market requirements regarding low-molecular-weight (LMW) phthalate plasticizers become increasingly stringent, many downstream customers have begun seeking alternative solutions that balance product performance, supply reliability, and regulatory compliance.

As one of the most widely adopted non-phthalate plasticizers, DOTP has become a mainstream solution in many applications. Nevertheless, in certain wire and cable compounds, flexible PVC products, and high-filler formulations, there is still room to improve compatibility and long-term durability.

UN480 was developed to provide the market with an upgraded plasticizer solution that combines compatibility, heat resistance, processing stability, and regulatory advantages. It also helps customers build more flexible and competitive PVC formulations tailored to different application requirements.

Why Choose UN480?

1. Improved Compatibility in Selected PVC Formulations
In PVC wire and cable applications as well as flexible PVC products, insufficient compatibility between plasticizers, PVC resin, and formulation additives may lead to exudation, surface tackiness, appearance changes, or odor issues during long-term storage, under compression, elevated temperatures, or highly filled formulation conditions.

UN480 helps improve compatibility with PVC, reducing the risk of plasticizer exudation under demanding conditions and enhancing product appearance, surface quality, and long-term stability. For customers currently using DOTP but seeking improvements in migration resistance, exudation control, or long-term durability, UN480 may be considered as an upgrade option.

2. Excellent Heat Aging and Electrical Insulation Performance
Wire and cable products are continuously exposed to electrical loading and temperature fluctuations throughout their service life. Therefore, heat aging resistance and electrical insulation performance are critical factors affecting product quality and service life.

According to internal test results, UN480 demonstrated excellent heat aging performance under 113°C for 7 days, outperforming both DOTP and DEHP, while meeting UL 80°C wire application requirements.

In addition, UN480 exhibits favorable volume resistivity characteristics, helping maintain the electrical insulation performance of PVC wire and cable products. Its performance also exceeds that of DEHP in this regard.

3. Regulatory and Market Trends Limiting DEHP Usage
With increasing regulatory requirements from EU RoHS, REACH, and various restricted substance lists established by global brand owners, downstream customers are placing greater emphasis on material compliance.

As a phthalate plasticizer that does not contain DEHP, DBP, BBP, or DIBP, which are regulated under RoHS and listed as SVHC substances, UN480 can help customers reduce regulatory and brand compliance risks associated with DEHP usage.

For export-oriented manufacturers and suppliers serving brand-driven markets, including wire and cable, vinyl flooring, flexible tubing, and outdoor flexible PVC applications, UN480 offers a practical solution that balances performance and compliance requirements.

Market Positioning of UN480

The plasticizer market offers a diverse range of mature solutions, including DEHP, DINP, DOTP, and various specialty plasticizers, each serving different application requirements. DEHP continues to maintain a presence in certain cost-sensitive markets. DINP is widely regarded as a reliable solution across many flexible PVC applications due to its balanced performance, processability, and cost-effectiveness. DOTP remains one of the most important non-phthalate alternatives available in the market.

The key value of UN480 lies in addressing specific performance gaps encountered in certain applications, particularly for customers seeking:

  1. Improved compatibility, reduced exudation, or enhanced long-term durability in DOTP-based formulations.
  2. Reduced regulatory and brand compliance risks associated with DEHP.
  3. Superior heat aging resistance, electrical insulation performance, and appearance stability in wire and cable applications.
  4. A better balance among performance, cost, and compliance requirements in flexible PVC products.

Different applications have different requirements, and different markets call for different strategies. Professional suppliers provide not only products, but also technical expertise to help customers evaluate their applications, identify the most suitable solutions and sourcing strategies, maximize formulation performance, and achieve successful product upgrades.
